Y’all knew I was talking about The Bible, right?
Yes! This is the one book that every single Christian homeschooler needs. But is it front and center in your homeschool? In your morning? Throughout your day? Sure, you probably have a curriculum with a “Bible” component. But is that really enough?
What I really want to ask is: Do your children see how much you cherish the Word of God? Do they see you turn to it for strength, comfort, wisdom, and encouragement?
I can assure you, your relationship with the Bible speaks louder than any assignments you give or any ways you try to connect your children to the Word.
When was the last time you thought about your Bible and how it is the very words of the GOD of the UNIVERSE written through human authors? It’s not just a collection of stories from history to study – it is THE story. The story of GOD and His plan to redeem humanity and create for himself a family, a home, a people. It is the revelation of Himself for us. It is our guide for life.
What The Word Says About Itself
Psalm 119:15 says, It is a lamp to our feet and light to our path
2 Timothy 3:16-17 reminds us, It is God-breathed and useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.
And Romans 15:4 tell us, it was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in it, and the encouragement it provides we may have hope.
Is the Bible that place for you? Do you approach it as the living, active word of God …. where the Holy Spirit desires to meet you and minister to you? Do you hunger for it like you hunger for food? (Matthew 4:4)
It is not just another book in your homeschool day, is it?
It is the truth. And it is what sanctifies us. (John 17:17)
All Throughout The Day
We are told to take His Word to our hearts and impress it on our children. Talk about the scriptures at home. In the car. Throughout the day. When we lay down. When we get up. Hang them up everywhere. Make His Words an ever-present part of our life. (Deut 6:6-9)
I encourage you to re-check your relationship with The Holy Bible. If you don’t hunger for it, ask the Lord to give you that desire. And even when you don’t feel the hunger, continue in obedience, seeking Him in His Word. As long as it takes, persevere daily until you do hunger for it. The Word is where the Lord wants to meet you. And He will answer all who seek Him.
Take This Seriously
Moms and Dads, your children are watching you. They are going to need the stronghold of His truth more than ever. Show them that Jesus, revealed through Scripture, is the anchor for their souls. Show them what a treasure it is. If you’ve found yourself doubting or drifting or no longer trusting it… confess that to the Lord, and start digging until you get to the deepest solid ground.
Find a church that teaches the Word and holds it in the highest esteem. Get into a Bible Study. Call a godly elder who loves the Word and has marinated in it their whole life. Ask for help. And there are countless hours of solid, expository teaching available for free online.
This is the “continuing education” that will make you the best homeschooling parent you can be. Studying His word and being FILLED with it – is one of the best gifts you can give your children.
When Dad isn’t Leading
And a note for moms: if your husband isn’t reading his Bible or teaching it to your children… you can pray. You can gently privately encourage him and spur him on. But you can not leave the void. You are not undermining your husband by feeding your children. Do it. Give your children this eternal bread – it is more important than even the daily food you offer.
Final Thoughts
So today, open your Bible and dive in. Let your children see you savoring the Word, and let Him transform your home through it, one day at a time. Pray His Words over your children. Speak them out loud. Let His truth be the answer to all of life’s questions. There is nothing more important we can do as Christian parents than to show our children how valuable and powerful the Bible is.
The Word reveals the LORD to us. It is how we know Him. And to know Him is to love Him.
Go ahead—reassess your heart, your relationship with Scripture, and commit to making it the foundation of your homeschool and your life. Your children will thank you for it someday.
