Eyes to See Grass

I’m still pondering how the small can be so sacred.

Most of life is lived in the small, and I think the Lord is always trying to awaken us to the wonders, miracles, and marvels tucked into our everyday.

Like grass.
Yes – grass.

I never knew how much I loved it… until I lived without it.

When I Cried Over Grass

After our house flooded with seven feet of water during Hurricane Florence, our family packed up and took a year-long road trip around the country. That unexpected season brought some of our most beautiful memories – especially the time we spent in the desert.

The desert was stunning. Expansive. Dramatic. It was everything you’d expect and more.
But when we finally reached Idaho and saw green grass again, I cried. Literal tears over blades of grass. I hadn’t realized how much I missed it.

We pulled into our RV site, and the moment I saw a little patch of lawn, I flung open the vehicle door and ran barefoot across it – rolling in the grass with such childlike joy that the lawn maintenance man just stood there, stunned. I didn’t care. It felt like coming home.

Familiar but Forgotten

I grew up in New Jersey, where the grass was lush, soft, and everywhere. But it was also familiar – so familiar that I only treasured it once in awhile.

Now I live where the soil is sandy and the grass is scruffy and sparse. It’s not the same. But I’ve realized something:
I crave grass. I treasure it now. I notice it everywhere I go.
My eyes have been opened.

Green must be one of God’s favorite colors – just look at how much of the world He painted with it. A gift in plain sight.

What If We Noticed?

You really don’t even hear children exclaim, “Wow! Look at that grass!”

But maybe they should. Maybe we should!

Think about it. How beautiful is grass? There’s sooo much variety – different shades, textures, heights. Soft and spongy. Wild and waving and unkept in a field. Maintained and loved by a family. Tough and resilient in a crack in the sidewalk. Growing up through the rocks where we don’t want it to. It’s always changing. Always going through seasons and somehow coming back after the winter.

Think of how many memories have happened in grass.
Sports. Picnics. Naps in the sun. Watching clouds. Walking barefoot. Rolling down hills. Fireworks on the Fourth of July. Grass has been with most of us our whole lives… mostly unnoticed.

And maybe that’s the very reason it holds such quiet, sacred weight. Because God’s handiwork is right there – in the ordinary, the familiar, and the overlooked.

Don’t Miss the Miracle Right in Front of You

We can get so caught up with our head in the clouds or eyes in the sky chasing the big – trying to “find our passion,” “live our purpose,” “reach our full potential,” “succeed” (in whatever definition we have for that) – that we overlook the holy ground beneath our feet.

There are sacred moments and glimmers here.
Maybe it’s in the grass.

But it may not be grass where you live. What is around you all the time that has become so familiar you don’t even see it?
This is an important practice: To notice what’s right in front of us.
In childlike wonder.
In quiet gratitude.

The small things aren’t small when we are enjoying them with God, for God, from God.

My Prayer

So here’s my prayer:
May I always have eyes to see grass.
To notice. To delight. To give thanks.
To let the small draw me back to the One who made it all.

Because even the tiniest blades of grass whisper something of Him –
That He is beautiful.
That He is the amazing Creator and Artist.
That He works in the often unseen and easily overlooked.
That He is near, whether I notice or not.
But He wants me to notice.
And there is great blessing in the noticing.

Scripture for Reflection

Romans 1:20 (NIV)
“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made…”
➡️ Even grass can be revealing something of God.

Job 12:7–10 (NIV)
“Ask the earth, and it will teach you… In His hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.”
➡️ The earth is speaking. We just have to listen.
